Dimensions of Arcanum has reviewed Arcanum - Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. You wouldn't expect a low rating from a fan site really, and their 8.0 is not bad. However, they are critical about the technical aspects (especially combat) of the game, as their low rating of 65 for this point reveals:

Combat in Arcanum is pure chaos; between the slowdowns and the followers, combat can be anything from amazingly simple to horribly complex. A simple fight can turn into death for you and all of your companions if one of your followers does something wrong. Many times I lost a follower because I was in a small space, and when one of my followers began to fight no one could get to the monster to help it out. Which makes an otherwise simple fight overly complicated. The combat in Arcanum is very much like Diablo 2. Though most of the time the creatures you'll fight will be incredibly easy to kill, many times in the game I was forced to fight characters that were sometimes 20 levels below me. This made traveling through the lands of Arcanum incredibly boring. Though there are spells that can take you to your destination they are only for magic users; this can be incredibly annoying at times for a tech char. This along with many issues goes to show that Arcanum has some balance issues. Magic is incredibly powerful and with tons of magic items through out the land it's not hard to equip a magic character with tons of amazing items; though if you choose to play a tech character you will most likely need to make most of your items. Tech characters also need to rely on other items to create there armors and weapons; these items range from incredibly common to extremely rare, this can pose a problem for those that don't have the time to go scavenging.
