A preview of Earth & Beyond, Westwoods upcoming futuristic MMORPG, can be found at IGN.PC today. Here's a bit about death in the game (which is always of concern in a MMORPG):
Death in the game is merely a state of inaction. You never lose any of your equipment and you never have to retrieve your "corpse." Once your ship takes sufficient damage, you merely shut down. From here you can still chat with other players. Since you show up on the game map as a derelict ship, players who have the jumpstart skill can find you pretty easily and get you up and running again (remember, connect positive to positive and negative to the ship frame). In the absence of any players endowed with 100% copper, high-guage wires, you can immediately be repaired up to a functioning level and start over at the nearest starbase.
The only penalty for death then is the time it takes you to get back to full functionality again. An experience point debt system was initially considered but later discarded and it certainly seems in keeping with Westwood's strategy of capturing a wider and more casual audience. Rade says the team is "trying to compress the fun and trying to make sure that things are mildly annoying as opposed to blowing your whole play session...doing corpse recovery." |
