1) If anyone missed this, he must have been hiding under a rock. Microsoft's next generation OS Windows XP was launched today. Bill Gates himself introduced it to the media at a launch party in New York.
Windows XP is supposed to combine the easy-to-use and spiffy looking interface of the Win9x series with the stability and security of Windows NT/2K.

XP is available in two different versions. A Home Edition that's clearly aiming at the consumer market and a Professional Edition for business customers.

Not too much has changed in comparison to Win9x. The major change is that all 16-Bit code has been removed from Windows XP. There's no more "DOS" under the hood.

First benchmarks indicate that Windows XP's performance is better than Win9x's. This holds only true though if you deactivate the eye candy stuff of XP. With all features turned on it's slightly slower than its predecessors.

If you want some personal advice: I'd not upgrade until I've seen the 1st compatibility test reports. I installed a leaked Professional version of XP a couple of weeks ago to test it and couldn't get Counter-Strike to run. I also experienced lots of graphics issues after installing Detonator 21.8x and a major slowdown of the whole system. Eventually I uninstalled XP. It seems like the 1st XP drivers and (supposedly compatible) Windows 2000 drivers are not working too well with the new system (yet).
As with any new Microsoft OS the best advice is: Don't upgrade if you have a clean and stable installation of an earlier OS. Use a little patience and wait for the release of the 1st service packs. Then get it when you'd had to re-install your OS anyways. Just buying it because of its new features is not necessary. There's plenty of 3rd party software out there that will do the job.

2) Gone Gold reports that UbiSoft's/Redstorm Entertainment's long awaited sequel to the 1st ever tactical shooter game series (Rainbow Six) has gone gold. Ghost Recon is expected to be in stores in the beginning of November (around the 4th or 5th).

3) GameSpot let us know that Westwood's Command & Conquer: Theater of War is shipping. The compilation contains the original Command & Conquer, Red Alert, Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2. Get what's missing ? Right. They left out the expansion packs. May nonetheless be an interesting collector's item. For the kids: back in 1995 the original C&C kicked off the real time strategy genre as we all know it today. It's the mother of all RTS (real time strategy) games.
