GameSpy has kicked up an interview in article format with NetDevil's Scott Brown and others about the use of the Havok physics engine in 'Auto Assault':NetDevil's collaboration with Havok didn't start out with any grandiose idea of trying to "revolutionize the MMO." In fact, according to Scott Brown, the whole thing began because NetDevil "just wanted to blow things up." "I don't know that we ever really thought in terms of needing a physics engine." Brown said. "We just sat down and starting working out how exactly we were going to simulate vehicular combat." As with many games, one of the key decisions the Auto Assault team had to make was whether to create all their own technology, or go outside the company and pick up some third-party support. Both methods have their benefits and drawbacks. Creating your own technology means that your game will be able to do exactly what you want it to do, but it also means creating a brand new piece of technology from the ground up while also building a game around it -- tantamount to inventing a camera and film while shooting a movie. Getting third-party technology, though, means adapting something that may not be capable of exactly what you need for your game. |
