1) Charles Miles, Wizardry 8 designer and manual guy shares some gameplay tips for starters with the Wiz8 community:
I've been playing the game myself recently, and thought I'd share a few tips for those who are just starting.
1. BARDS VS. GADGETEERS. Which to choose really depends on what you enjoy. The Gadgeteer has to make his spellcasting items out of things he finds during his adventures. A Gadgeteer has to examine every area carefully for useful components, and then experiment to combine the components into something useful. So patience is required. Well, either patience or a hint guide.
If you read that and said, "Great! Sounds like fun" then a Gadgeteer is for you. If you said, "Bah! I want to be able to use things the instant I find them" then you may want a Bard instead.
2. RUN AWAY! It's a big, wild world out there, and one of the most important secrets to staying alive is knowing when NOT to fight. That means avoiding combat before it starts if you're not in a mood for a fight. Keep a close eye on your radar map, and steer clear of the red dots. Eventually you'll want to acquire the Chameleon spell, which helps hide you from the monsters.
3. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. It's important to use your skills as often as possible so that they'll improve. While your party may be able to survive at the start with melee skills alone, don't skimp on the spellcasting. Your casters will need plenty of practice to make them effective later on in the game. This is especially true of hybrid characters like Lords.
Note that you only gain skill if you're trying to do something useful. You can't get your magic skills up to 100 by locking yourself in a hotel room and casting the Light spell repeatedly. However, one good way to practice is to have everyone who can cast Heal Wounds on injured party members before you camp. This also shortens your camping time, as spell points regenerate faster than hit points.
4. DON'T FORGET YOUR FORMATION. Be sure to check it every time you add or dismiss an RPC. You don't want to leave your wimpy mage exposed.
5. USE ALL THOSE POTIONS, POWDERS, ETC. You'll find a million of 'em. It's tempting to simply sell them all for cash, but battles will go much easier if you actually use them. Note that characters need Throwing skill to use powders and bombs effectively, and Artifacts skill for most everything else.
6. HAVE A NICE LONG TALK. When you chat with NPCs, make full use of the dialogue system. You can interact with NPCs in three different ways: by double-clicking on words in the keyword list, by double-clicking on words in the NPC's dialogue, or by typing words, phrases, or even whole sentences into the text input box.
Have fun!
