RPGDot 2002 Awards
Most Anticipated MMORPG

The RPGDot Team, 2002-01-09

In the last weeks of December 2002, you had the opportunity to vote for the best RPGs released in 2002. Nobody knows better what these are then you the player and as such The RPGDot 2002 Awards will look good on any game receiving one.
We thank all those who entered their votes and helped us in making it possible to select the best games.

Most Anticipated MMORPG

Is there an online game which you definitely want to play in 2003? Is there one game that you believe will make you pay the monthly dues? Our visitors think so and they think these are them....

The winner: Star Wars Galaxies - An Empire Divided
It is no surprise that a Massively Multiplayer game under the Star Wars franchise would be one of the most anticipated games this year, maybe even in the history of the genre. Still, if one looks beyond the simple name and digs a little deeper into the concept there is something to be anticipated there indeed. Hopping from world to world in search of greater glory for the Empire, or freedom for the Rebels, harnessing the powers of the Force for greater good or darker evil has been a wish of many generations since the film first came out in 1977. In 2003, that wish should become reality.

We can only hope that the game will survive its outrageous hype, but SWG has the potential to become the most popular MMORPG of all time, with many fans already sold on the game.

Runner Up: EverQuest 2
Of course, what other game to be second in line in the most anticipated MMORPGs after Star Wars Galaxies than the sequel to the most popular title of all: EverQuest. The fan base is already there.

Even after a little under 4 years EQ is still the most played of all MMORPGs, and its adventurers are anticipating the revised second generation title with great interest. Beyond the wonderful graphics and promised features, EQ2 has an experienced team behind it to possibly make it one of the more feature-complete games out there. Let’s face it, they’ve had to listen to 4 years of comments from dedicated players. The end result can only be positive. Lets just hope that the EQ2 team was really listening to their expecting fans.

Second Runner Up: Middle Earth
The Lord of the Rings has just recently entered the wonderful realm of Pop culture, to the joy of some and the sadness of others. Still a long way from release, Middle Earth is already synonymous with great adventures to many hardcore RPG players in the industry. Perhaps it is behind its Star Wars counterpart simply because it is so far from release, but expect to see this title move up the chart by the end of the year.

The only thing most Tolkien fans will ask is that the game be faithful to the original material while allowing them to take on the roles of sturdy adventurers Orc hunting through the plains of Rohan. No other title carry more myth than this one, and perhaps that is why it is both highly anticipated by some, and absolutely dreaded by other gamers out there. Living up to a legend is never easy.

The Numbers
To make it complete we now give you the top 10 as voted by our visitors:

Star Wars Galaxies - An Empire Divided
EverQuest 2
Middle Earth
Horizons - Empires of Istaria
Final Fantasy 11
Dragon Empires
Ultima Online - Age of Shadows
The Matrix
City of Heroes

And 33,9% of those who participated were unable to select one of the games.

We, the RPGDot team also voted to create our own top 5:

Star Wars Galaxies - An Empire Divided
A Tale in the Desert
3. Horizons - Empires of Istaria 7,1%
3. Atriarch 6,0%

Some people on the team played the A Tale in the Desert beta and were enthousiastic about it, which explains why it ranks at the second place. But we are all waiting for Star Wars Galaxies.

Note that percentages are rounded to the nearest number.
