Dragon Quest/Warrior 8 Announced For PS2

Today at a strategy meeting Enix finally announced the eighth installment of its highly successful Dragon Quest/Warrior series. Not surprisingly, the game will be released for Playstation 2 which is the best selling of the current three next-gen consoles. What is surprising though is the fact that Enix is cooperating on the game's development with Level 5, known for their PS2 RPG Dark Cloud. The company had previously been working with a company called Heartbeat on the last few Dragon Quest/Warrior games, but Heartbeat went out of business a few months ago. How this will effect the game compared to the others, as well as the recently announced merger between Square and Enix, will be seen in time.

Yuuji Horii will once again be responsible for the scenario and game design, Akira Toriyama (of Dragonball Z fame) will be the character designer and Kouichi Sugiyama will compose the soundtrack, all as before. Like previous Level 5 creations, the game will have a comic feel to it, created through toon shading (cel-shading) techniques.

Dragon Quest 8 has yet to receive a release date or pricing, although Enix previously had mentioned that the game will be released sometime in Q1 2004.

Two large, albeit blurry, Japanese magazine scans showing information and pictures of this game can be found at RPGFan.com.
