I guess we had about half a dozend 3D artists since then. We gave them the task of making the models and then ... (want to guess?) ... they disapeared. The situation got so bad, that we almost consider these models to be cursed. It is now some kind of a running gag within the team (a new 3D artist? great! Give him the smithing task? No, please don't! We don't want to lose him). And this is the reason, why the smithing system is still unfinished.
