Game Axis has put Liquid's LotR: War of the Ring through its paces. Their review has a fairly disappointing score of 6.6/10 and here's a clip:
The game adheres strictly to a tried-and-tested formula so much so that it comes off as a Warcraft 3 clone. There are a lot of striking similarities between the two games in fact; the first you’d notice is how the menu screens look almost identical. The lightning effects illuminating the background every once in a while…it’s all here. The next you’ll notice is the use of what is termed a ‘hero’ unit in WC3. Similarly, the hero here has his own special abilities to aid him or benefit those around him. Also, the hero unit gains experience points after every kill and gains levels. The missions are linked by a series of cutscenes and sometimes, upon completing certain objectives, real time-generated events will play out. Yet more resemblance to WC3.
