There is an interesting interview with BioWare's CEO Ray Muzyka at Gamesp today, talking about NWN, Star Wars: KotOR and two new games:
GameSpy: Another thing you said during your talk was that by far the favorite game type of you, Greg, and the other Bioware employees are role-playing games. Does that mean that the two IPs that you're now developing are going to be role-playing games? If you were branching out into a new field, are there fields you wouldn't touch, like sports or first-person shooters?
Ray Muzyka: I don't think we've ever excluded any, but for us, the key element in role-playing games is story and character development. I think you can have almost any kind of game or any kind of interface, and if you had story and character, for us that would be a role-playing game. So by that definition, yeah, the two new ones in development are role-playing games. We have a very broad view of that. We think that anything with story and character can be construed for role-playing. I don't mind sports games, but I don't know if we would ever make a sports game. A true simulation sports game? I think there are many people who do those really well. It would be a real challenge to make a sports game. You have to get licenses too, with sports games, to be successful. A role-playing sports game? Maybe. We don't have anything like that in development right now, but it's an interesting idea. |
