A preview of Age of Wonders 2 - The Wizard's Throne has been published at The Wargamer. Here's something about the plot and heroes:
The King of the Wizards, Gabriel, is finding his power challenged in his declining years. The world is being plunged into chaos by rebel wizards vying for control. Unable to interfere directly, Gabriel recruits Merlin, a young human wizard who would be both his ally and successor. Throughout the course of the campaign, Merlin will challenge the rebel wizards in turn, elevating his own skills in the process. The campaign is all about developing Merlin into the new Wizard King; various allies and recruits along the way do not follow Merlin beyond individual scenarios. This is being done for play balance reasons, as open-ended variables make late campaign game balance next to impossible. "In the original game, heroes could be developed to the verge of immortality," said Fels. "On one hand, you would have players who over-develop the heroes then complain the game is too easy, on the other; you would have players complain that the game gets repetitive if they are forced to linger and ensure their heroes are up to the next task."
