Andrew Tepper, eGenesis Founder and Lead Designer for A Tale inthe Desert, was partner in an interview about this unusual MMORPG at Gamespy. Once again, here's a snip for you:
GameSpy: Is ATITD focused solely on the building and community aspects of pursuing advancement, or are there game elements that satisfy more traditional player urges like exploration and discovery?

Andrew Tepper: The two tie together: Explorers will find that others in the community value them as a trader, a way to move goods around as a side effect of their exploration. (Remember that in ATITD there is no way to warp goods around at will!) Discovery is most often done as a community, by funding research projects at a university. The tech tree is huge, and projects in the tech tree are too difficult for most players to tackle single handedly (although we've seen a few extraordinary cases.)
