Anarchy Online Center has an interview with AO Lead Designer Tommy Strand. Here's something he said about lag in the game:

With 60,000 users per today (anno 2. august), the amount of users of Anarchy Online went above any expectations. Due to this, many players faced some problems with lag and disconnections. – We’ve encountered some problems with lag, and people are seemed to believe that it’s the server that’s the problem, but the truth is that the problem is now with the clients. However, we’ve located the main problems and hopefully it’ll be fixed in a couple of patches, says Tommy Strand.

Many non-us residents are curious why there is only a server in the USA and not in e.g. Norway. – The location of the server is not a cause to the lag some players unfortunately are experiencing, and since the game only is released in Norden (Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland) and the USA there has been no need for a server in Europe. AO is going to be released in Germany, Benelux, UK and France the 28th September, a new server is probably coming then, Tommy tells me.
