PRGVault has written a review of a book written by Neal Hallford in collaboration with his wife Jana, Swords & Circuitry: A Designer's Guide to Computer Role-Playing Games. The book deals with just that: how to designe CRPG's. Here's RPGVault's verdict:
It's difficult to give an overview of what you'll find in Swords & Circuitry without it sounding rather dry. Luckily, the book itself is not. Neal Hallford is a talented writer who takes the subject matter and makes it highly readable by using devices such as personal anecdotes and humor to good effect, by avoiding deep technical discussions, and in general by keeping the tone readily accessible. After reading this book, you won't instantly be transformed into a great or even a competent CRPG designer. If that's your goal however, it may just give you some new insight into what it takes to become one. If it's not, even if you've never had any desire to make role-playing games, you're likely to find Swords & Circuitry an enjoyable, informative read that will improve your understanding of the games we love and what it takes to create them. |
