I don't like it personnally. The visual are good, though characters look blocky. I find the gameplay boring and too dated. There are many old games I have enjoyed much more that G2. And as far as recent games I recommend Arx Fatalis better. |

Great game, but the greater world in comparison with Gothic 1 comes with a price: Some places are not so fine-tuned as in Gothic 1. One the other hand: more quests, more fights, great final, more Gothic - I want #3 ... as soon as possible. |

Gothic 2 is the ultimate RPG! A very realistic world in which every of the 400 (!) NPC's has it's own complex scripting (they work during daytime, sit around the campfire to eat, talk to other NPC's, sleep, etc).
The fact that the world is totally seamless 3D world is also great (and no: it's not that pseudo seamlessness as in Dungeon Siege). |

This game is just perfect. It's got the freedom of Morrowind (well nearly ;), but you still don't get lost in non-linearity. It's got the Atmosphere of Arx Fatalis and the Action of Rune!

A wonderful game with a beautiful and detailed world to explore, an intersting (although not terribly original) story, and great technical execution. Only major critique goes to the non-existant techsupport from Jowood, that cost me several hours of gameplay. I was a little surprised that the NPC shceduling (for which the first part was already famous) has not really been improved in this second game - in fact there were more characters that did not have a full schedule than in the first part.
The game is a bit more of the RPG-adventure type and does not offer the freedom in character creation that you may be used to from other RPG's, the amount of armor is very limited, and while free-form adventuring is definitely there you will find yourself much more forced to work on the main quest than e.g. in Morrowind. Another minor niggle is the lack of larger dungeons (with exeption to the endgame dungeon). But Gothic 2 more than makes up for all this by presenting you with an intersting and living world to adventure in. This is a game that is almost as much fun to watch someone else play instead of playing yourself. |

I couldn't wait any longer. I ordered the German version from Amazon.de and am playing now for about 1 week. It's the best RPG I have played, ever!
I played Baldur's Gate 2, Morrowind, Neverwinter Nights recently and it tops all of them. The replay value is also very high. When you start over, you can join another guild and get a whole lot of new quests which cannot be gotten by other guilds!
Graphically, it's the best I've seen so far. The atmosphere is amazing, especially when going through the woods, which get darker when you get to the dangerous parts, music gets eerie, leaves rustle under your feet, a branch snaps, animal sounds are very foreboding, and all of a sudden you're jumped by 3 wargs snapping at you. Goose bumps all over you assured.

As I started to play the game, in the very first moments I mentioned some changes, that made the game more interesting. In the second part I really felt the life in the game. You really feel, that every character has his own life, kis story, his thinking... You feel, that the life is going further in the game, everybody is doing his job - working, just going around, crashing someones face and so on... If you can fully go in to the game, you can't just leave it. It's simply great. Just think about the script while you are playying, and ypuWILL enjoy it.

Grab your Jolt Cola and prepair for a long night of adventuring. I loved Gothic and Gothic 2 once again has me ignoring all life outside my pc box. This game is not for the average. I hear too many complaints about controlls and dying to easy etc.. Cry elswhere cause with patiance you will find that there is battle strategy, there is combo system to your fighting, and eventually you will be the strong bad a@@ that you want to be. Of course you must understand the Gothics way of leveling up etc. I think too many users give up too soon on this jewel. I live in US and could not wait so I got an english copy overseas. Thank you Piranha-Bytes and Jo-Wood for giving me the only action RPG I ever care to play. I've got money set aside for Gothic 3 so keep rolling them out. |

General/Summary:
This is a great game. All RPG's should be compared to the Gothic series. It's innovative, brilliant, and beautiful. For a developer, it's inspirational. It's not a game for those who prefer dull puzzles and mindless linear storylines. It's a game for the patient, the imaginative, the intellectual, and the dreamer.
Gameplay:
Controls - The controls are simple, easy to remember, and very unconventional. Most RPG games assign a different key for almost every task, making it very difficult to get into the zone Gothic controls so effortlessly allow. A true RPG fan needs to get "into" the game. Like a movie, you can't enjoy the game if you've got a constant awareness of real time; what's going on around you while your playing. To someone who didn't play the original Gothic, the classic controls might seem awkward at first, but after the first hour or two you'll find the controls feel as natural as breathing. The non-classic controls are less awkward to a first time user, but have the same long-term benefits. Having played the original, I personally recommend and prefer the classic controls.
Realism - This is where the Gothic series makes it's mark. There is no other RPG with as much realism as this --and it keeps getting better! Perhaps one of the greatest things about the AI realism is the actual speech. Unlike most games, you don't have to read until your eyes hurt. In fact, you rarely have to read at all. Every single NPC speeks. When you choose something to say you will literally say it, and the NPC you're talking to will literally talk back. You can have real conversations. You don't read their responses. You hear them! NPC's sleep, eat, bath, argue, chat, walk, pray, sweep, hammer, swim, cook, smoke, play music, dance, practice combat, brew, work at farms, saw wood, forge, build, hunt, patrol, etc... 8,000 characters just isn't enough space to list all the things NPC's do throughout their daily routines! AI realism is so amazing you might even be so unfortunate as to see a man literally peeing in the corner of the castle walls or on the trunk of a tree. The realism in this game is truly the best. Not even Morrowind AI can compare!
AI realism isn't the only realism worthy of recognition. You can literally play this game over and over again, exploring new possibilities and quests each time. You can play the role of a ruthless, a merciful, or a neutral character. You can kill NPCs at will or let them live in the hopes that they might serve you in the future. You can communicate with multiple options of personality to respond with accordingly. You can explore a world large and memorable. You'll quickly discover which creatures to avoid until later when you've grown and developed your character, and you'll never grow tired of slaying the creatures vulnerable to your wrath. You'll connect to some NPC's and you'll develop a personal disliking to certain others. You choose your own path! You choose your own allegiance! You decide your own fate!
Combat - Combat, like the controls, is very unconventional, but once adapted to, is flawless...
For close ranged combat you have the option of using several types of weapons which break down into two types of skills. You can become skillful in 1H combat, or 2H combat. 1H combat can constist of swords, axes, hammers, staffs, sickles, daggers, and much more. 2H combat can consist of swords, axes, and much more. When untrained, close handed combat requires timing. With the awesome camera angles, timing is easy to master. The more you train in either 1H combat or 2H combat, the more strategies and combinations become available to you. For example, a master at 1H combat can hit three arrow keys in the right order to do a fast and extremely lethal combination. 1H weapons generally allow for faster swings and more combinations. 2H weapons generally allow for more damage.
For long-ranged combat you have the option of using two types of projectiles and several types of magic. For projectiles you can train in a crossbow or a bow (archery). There are several types of crossbows, and several types of bows. Training in either of these skills will improve your accuracy. For magic there are kinds that do direct damage, area of effect damage, summon creatures to do damage for you, and there are kinds that transform you into creatures with other abilities and factions. Crossbows often allow for more damage. Bows generally allow for faster shooting.
You can use scrolls or runes. Scrolls can be purchased or found, and have a onetime only use. Runes can be used as often as your mana permits. You can also train to increase your mana. Magicians focus primarily on runes for combat. They have the ability to learn circles of magic. Each circle of magic contains a new set of spells which can be created as runes. The higher the circle of magic, the more powerful the spells become.
You'll come across many types of armor with unique properties throughout your journies. Whichever guild you decide to join will have its own set of armors you can earn or purchase as you progress through the game. You have the ability to create your own weapons, runes, or even potions. You'll have the option of training in looting skills which enable you to cut off or remove certain parts of creatures and take with you as trophies. These trophies can later be used to sell to merchants for gold or assist you in quests or replenishment.
You'll come across many secretive objects, items, or NPCs which can increase your abilities or attributes. You can go through the entire game without even discovering half its quests and secrets!
Navigation - The world is much larger than the original Gothic, which means you've got more secrets to uncover, more creatures to slay, and more of all the other things that brought the wilderness of the original Gothic to life. Since the game is based on a time when men probably didn't have compasses, your left to choose between memory or cartography to guide you when your lost. Since the vast land in Gothic 2 is so memorable, I choose to rely on memory to find my way around, but a handy map doesn't hurt. When looking at your map you'll see a small, white arrowhead which indicates your current location on the map. This makes recognizing your current location in relation to where you want to be very easy and convenient. Since another contributing factor to the realism of the game is the in-game time factor, you've got to be prepared for the darkness of night. Players have the option of using a spell which provides light, using a torch, turning the gamma up in the options menu, or simply finding a bed to sleep in until the next morning. If a player is wounded or has no mana left with which to cast spells, players can sleep and wake fully rejuvenated or consume special herbs or foods/drinks.
Criticism - The only thing worthy of complaint in the gameplay is the voice acting. There are so many NPCs it is understandable and forgiving, but, nonetheless annoying no matter how hard we try to overlook it. Due to a limited supply of voice actors the same voice is used for several different NPCs. I was especially saddened by the change in the voice actor for the NPC, Diego. In the original Gothic, many players, including myself, made a personal connection with NPCs such as Diego. In Gothic 2, hearing a strange, new voice assigned to the same NPC is almost heartbreaking. I went from feeling like Diego was a dear friend, to feeling like I didn't even know him anymore. It would be better if the voice actors were made to sign a legal agreement obligating them to stick with their characters for the duration of the Gothic series. I certainly hope they get the original voice actor back for Diego, and have more voice actors to go around for the common NPCs in Gothic 3.
Graphics:
The graphics is astonishing. The level of detail is simply amazing. There is more detailed plant life than any other game I've ever played. In some areas you can easily get lost in the forest. It really brings the world of Gothic even more to life. The sky and weather effects are simply beautiful. You will find yourself pausing on a cliff or a hill just to watch the sunset or sunrise. Few games have better things that contribute to the graphics of a game, but as a whole this game has the absolute best. The only RPG with better gaphics in terms of realism is Morrowind, but the attention to detail in Gothic 2 is far better than anything out there.
Sound:
The sound is breathtaking. I was playing the other day and my friend just happened to stop by for a visit. He heard the in-game music/sound and commented on it. This coming from someone who doesn't even like games; he said he was amazed at how clear, realistic, and powerful it was. From the birds chirping and the creatures roaring, to the gentle tunes of the music; it all fits perfectly. It further enhances the experience by enthralling the mind.
Note:
The Gothic series is truly the best CRPG. I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't at least try it. It's a game that takes time to adjust to for beginners. The Gothic series hasn't spent a lot of money on advertising, therefore, the game doesn't get the recognition it deserves. If this is the first you've heard of the game, visit the Gothic forums. This game deserves the spot amongst the best of them: Ultima VII, Baldur's Gate II, Planescape: Torment. They all play diffrent so I can't say which one is the best, but still Gothic is the ONLY game that matches the athmosphere of Ultima. I've been waiting for this for 10 years. |

Gothic 2 is a very good game, allmoust a true classic.It doesn't have many weakpoints.
Only that it could have been a bit longer and larger.Developers should have also put a little more skills to choose from.Also drawing near the very end story loses a bit of it's edge, but never the less its still one of the best games i've played a very long time. |

If you had put decimals for rating i'd put 9.4.There had to be more climatological effects like wind and dust raising from the ground, and the combat sytem could been better(look at pop3d not just cpy it but adquire some parts from it)(Especially the focus part).Havent found yet a keystroke to change focus, but havent slept well playing it. And to those who say this game is no good I must say it really reminds me of good old game where the story was important and not just the graphics.

I've just finished Gothic II and while it held my attention with plenty of side quests and a great main plot it left many question unanswered - which, like others, I hop will be answered in Gothic III. The main attraction for me are the way the NPCs have lives and personalities of their own and the 3D immersive graphics are excellent. I can't help but compare G I with G II and I have to say that I didn't find the ending anywhere near as spectactular as G I. Looks like the guys at Piranha bites were strapped for time. Great game, higly recommended. |

A very enjoyble game. The visuals are great, especially the landscape, and the "living" NPC´s. The game is very story driven but offers many side-quest and areas for exploring on top of that. If it has any shortcomings its the absence of character creation and the limited way the character can be formed, although the different guilds do offer a lot of replay value nonetheless.
Game was very stable except for one bug, obviously created by a corrupt gameworld save file, that would not allow me to get back from the mine valley to Corinis. Loading an earlier save this did not happen again though.
All in all a must-have (especially considering there is now an add-on to make the game-world even bigger). |

Really, I can't express how much fun gave me this game. I'm waiting eagerly for the third part. In fact, this is not so gameplay game as Warcraft that you can play several mouths, but I had really great time playing gothic 2 during ,what's true short time , one mouth. I'm really not english so I can't specify what i felt entering an old camp (in first part) victorious from mine or from anywhere else. Or listening attentively advices before next great adventure in huge and beatiful world- simply in my opinion this is the best game in its kind |

I can hardly remember the last time a game sunk its teeth so deeply into my very being. The last game to even compare was Baldurs Gate. But with the sumptuous landscapes and gently swaying trees, even this comes a poor second to Gothic II. The other thing I love about the game is that you never feel stuck (something I absolutely loath in games) if you are having trouble getting past a certain monster then just go off adventuring somewhere else and you will find the story pulling you in another direction. You can always come back to previous problems when you are a bit stronger or have a new skill. In conclusion forget Half Life, Deus Ex and almost every other game to come out in the last decade or so. This is the game I have been waiting for all my life, I am completely enchanted by the great story and wonderful graphics. I only wish I did not have to work then I could spend longer playing.

Gothic 2 gehört neben Ultima 7, BG2, Fallout 1 und 2 zu den besten je produzierten Rollenspielen. Unterhaltsamer als das sicherlich nicht schlechte Morrowind, das ich ebenso wie die oben genannten Titel komplett durchgespielt habe, ist es auf jeden Fall.Da ich persönlich keine Probleme mit der Steuerung oder diversen Bugs hatte, kann ich die Kritik einiger Leute nicht nachvollziehen (U 7 ist beim mir häufiger abgestürzt als Gothic 2!!). |

I never really liked rpg's because of their boring gameplay (morrowind...neverwinter...) and 'tiled' environments (morrowind...neverwinter...) but Gothic 2 (also Gothic 1)is an exceptional game, it stands apart from all other rpg's and should inspire future attempts by rpg-makers. After playing Gothic 2, I realized how much Morrowind lost in its attempt to become so open-ended and non-linear with its gameplay. You could say Gothic 2 is very similar to Morrowind only on a smaller scale and with a somewhat messy interface. It uses the same action oriented combat system that games like Morrowind employ which I think rubs some people the wrong way. I don't mind this system of "arcade combat" in RPGs but I wish the game had done a better job with its interface. Easy-to-use hotkeys on the screen, a more reliable enter & exit battle mode, and smoother character movement all would have helped the combat system immensely. The story is good but I recommend you play the first Gothic because unlike some sequels which you can play and not lose anything, Gothic 2 focuses back on a lot of the central characters and events from the first game although you can still play without knowing about them, it's just more enjoyable knowing the history of the Gothic world. Considering this game was made by a small company, it's an excellent product, and it won't get the hype and press a Neverwinter Nights or Warcraft will but it's a nice gaming experience for RPG fans. It has a very simple attribute system but you still find yourself compelled to level up your character and discover the menace facing your newly adopted city. The inventory system is horrible, and basically an example of some of the things in this game that just feel unpolished but all in all, it's a pleasant game that kept me playing. Sometimes there was too much random roaming and killing which I had to do to level up so I could stand a chance against some of the more powerful enemies, but that's just me, I enjoy the stories and quests more than the hacking and leveling. ;-) |

Jamsession you are a complete moron to think that this game doesn't have an atmosphere. Morrowinds atmosphere was a complete joke, there isnt even a comparison, Gothic's atmosphere absolutely destroys morrowind. From the beautiful terrain to the npc's that actually interact with your actions. man what morrowind did you play? As far as you saying the Gothic stories are thin, thats ludicrous you morrowind fanboy, stop voting great games down for no reason. -Impressive graphics. The environments are so realistic. You feel like you are actually there. Every cubic yard you adventure in is unique.
-Funny. This game has a sense of humor! The things some of the characters say, really catch you off guard and make you laugh. I can identify with the writers sense of humor. Very funny!
-Little surprises. Everytime you think you've seen it all, another little unique feature comes out that either makes you laugh or makes you say, COOL!
-Excellent voice acting. Although you can tell that some of the characters voices are done by the same guy (The Xardas guy is the most noticable) they are still done very well and are believable.
-Very long, in depth game with lots to see and do. I didn't think the game was ever gonna end. Almost too long!
-It's fun to play! AND VERY ADDICTING! If you play it long enough to 'get into it' (an hour or so) you'll find it hard to stop.
-Everything is all tied together seemlessly. |

When Gothic 2 came out I didn't even dare to hope it would be as good as Gothic was. Most sequels are either just more of the same or worse than the original. But Jowood actually managed to take the best parts of Gothic, improve the graphics, increase the world size and add more of everything and make the entire package even better! Even the story, which I originally thought would be Gothic 2's downfall was great and felt like it belonged in the world Gothic had set. Easily one of the best games I've ever played. |

My rating is based on a comparison to the other crpg games. I've played almost of them since dos. A couple things that come to mind are the fact that there is no flying, and a bunch of stupid spells. Also, Bugs, bugs and more bugs and there are fewer skills, not near as many intersting things!

I thought Morrowind was the best single player RPG their was, until I played Gothic 2. The game is easy to learn the basics but it takes time to master. The story has a lot of depth, the characters you met are all well written. Very well done! |

In the beginning big magician tells mr. noname about evil dragons and that mr. noname is the chosen one to kill them. Guess what mr. noname will do in the end. Between beginning and end mr. noname is talking to "living" NPCs and he experiences almost all the clichés and stereotyped phrases of the genre.

A very good single-player RPG in an awesome 3D heroic fantasy world. Very good combat system, especially for the melee, as for once, it is not automated and you have to time each action, just like a magician. Really open world, but the leveling system is not rich enough to make the player able to really customize his/her guilded character. 3 classes, no multi-classing. |

This game was wonderful! Turn the model details and textures way up to see metal sheen, water reflect, and clouds float through the sky. Heck, even the trees sway in the wind! the game is breathtaking both as a visual masterpiece, and a classic story of a nameless fate. The downward aspects of the game are a few, though, with the interface not as organized as the first, and the overall shortness of the game. And it wouldn't hurt to bring acrobatics back either!
Overall, Gothic II is wonderful, don't skip out on it, and cross your fingers for the addon! |

It is games like this that really make me wish we all spoke the same language. Very well done enjoyed it more than morrowwind and I am the biggest rpg fan i know. Just bought the first one for 60 bucks because I loved the second so much. I played the demo controls are difficult but only a small draw back to the addiction of the game. |

Well, im now kind of representing the people of my country so even if i havent played this game since it came out, i just began to play with a demo that a friend gave me at school so when i first started playing i had to change all the keys cause ive never liked PC games before, but as soon as i started to get into the story i just felt compeled to follow it till the end, so i need to buy it real quick so i can be able to catch up to the sequel, since i was 8 years old it is the best RPG ive ever played in my life !! and now im 23, so i wold have to make a big list of all the stuff it has. |

I loved Gothic 1 and gave it a rating of 10 despite it's bugs.
Gothic 2 I rate a 9.
It's basically the same game with some graphic improvements and less bugs than the first but there are a few things about it I like a tad less than the first installment.
In Gothic 1 there were several steps to crafting weapons. In Gothic 2 they've cut it down to 2 steps. I liked it better the old way.
They have added some new crafts though which is nice.
I still don't like the combat focus. I'd rather aim on my own. Item focus is fine the way it is however.
Once again they only have about 6 voice actors for the english version. I think they should let us fans do voice acting for them to add diversity to the game. We'd do it for free too!
The Gothic series is my second favorite RPG series next to Morrowind.

The story is the same as a thousand other games: fetch the artifact to fight the demonic villain. And all the subquests have the same originality. Everything's so predictable you'll feel you've already played this game many times before.
The dialogues are incredibly boring and npcs have absolutely no personality; and I don't understand why everyone has to shake their arms around while they're talking, as if they had a wasp in their shirt.
There's absolutely no identification to the hero as the appearance, personality and clumsy sense of humor of the character are imposed to the player.
Play this game if you still enjoy killing thousands of wolves, goblins, orcs and so on for hours and hours. Personally I got sick of it pretty fast. Apart from Sacred I don't think I've ever played a worse RPG. |

This game has an actual quest line-up which gives the game a meaning for playing. Most of the times you will be busy fulfilling quest instead of killing monsters to evolve a level(as regrettebly is the case with most games). Instead of being forced to scout the surrounding, finishing the quest will level you up naturally through the challenges found from the quests. It is really awesome how well this works.
Another positive thing about this game is the way you join a class. Where you will have to choose your class in the beginnening of most RPG's here you select it during the course of the game, which is quite realistic and gives you the possibility of finding out which guild would apply to you.
There is so much more to talk about such as the real life world(where you are not the only person moving around and the NPC's seem to be statues) and the skill based combat (In which you can not write everything down to your level but can also influence the outcome of a battle through good skill) and the diversion of the quest etc.etc.
You really have to play it to find out where I am talking about.

Not perfect but one of the best Role playing games I had ever played. It's true the controls take some getting used to and the game can be tough for beginners. But this is one of those game that if you put in some time it will be well worth it. Gothic is probably what Might and Magic should have evolved too. Both games had compelling game worlds but Gothic seemed to me a step up in first person perspective immersive RPG worlds. I loved this game and look forward to its sequel. |

After playing Gothic 1, I was eagerly awaiting Gothic II. I was not disappointed. Once again the story drew me in like no other game. I was very impressed with the graphics improvements over the first gothic and this one was less buggy so the over all enjoyment was compounded. The interaction with NPC's and other unique features of the Gothic series never fails to intensely hold my interest. The only down side was that I finished the game. I could have continues playing this game for years. |

A great looking game but frustrating fighting genes. Always have to be in forward motion to fight something. If one moves through the opponent. The opponent can hit you and you have no chance for he is behind you and u can't swing to hit him unless your moving forward. At least in morrowind u can fight while turning around. the graphics are good and like the story line but the frustrating fighting gene. Thought about purchasing the game but after demo no-way |

I see Gothic as the latest step forward in the evolulion of CRPG. First Wizardry for putting it on the screen. Bards Tale came along and refined the graphics process. Ultima came along and made the gaming fluid. And the last and latest step was Gothic which made the whole gaming world come alive. (Something Oblivion is sorely hoping for). Its been 3 years and to this date you can not play a CRPG that has a more living game world. A true testatment to brilliant game design. |

Gothic is by far the best RPG ever made and anyone who doesn`t agree either hasn`t played it or isn`t a true fan of good RPG`s.The storyline of Gothic 1 & 2 is the best of any RPG i`ve ever played.Many RPG`s offer many things: Morrowind had size and choise but in all it felt very dead but was good stil. Gothic which has a much smaller budget beats it by far. Everything just fits and you start feeling like your part of the world. Great Stuff Gothic you always amaze me more and more and i`m sure Gothic3 will be even better. |

There is something oddly addictive about this game. I would place it with Final Fantasy X (PS2) and Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind (PC, XBOX) as the top RPG on any system as of early 2006. I've played it three times and I love it every go-around. Recommended for gamers who don't mind difficulty in their games and prefer the grueling level-by-level non-linear hack fest that most MMORPGs employ, because that's what this game feels like. Don't get frustrated at first, this game won't hold your hand like many of the easy CRPGs on the market these days. Once you get used to the gameplay, this game will whip your social life away! Gothic 1 not required, but it does help to know the story in the first game, because you will again meet many of the key figures from the first game. I think another thing I enjoy about this game is it doesn't have the same obsession of good vs. evil that other RPGs uilize. Everyone seems to have large shades of grey in this game. Highly recommend that you buy the Gold Edition which comes with the expansion, Night of the Raven. |
