Gamesmania has posted a preview of Art of Magic, the sequel to 1999's Magic & Mayhem:
I’ve been playing a beta version of the game, and it is indeed a very interesting mix of genres. The game starts out a little slow so you can get used to things. The game has gone completely 3D, so you are presented with an initially fogged-out 3D map to explore. The maps can consist of hills, rivers, impassable mountains, and buildings. You can talk to the people you meet, pick up magical reagents or amulets that can be found here and there, and of course, fight the monsters you encounter. You can zoom the camera in and out and rotate it. This presents a very diverse selection of angles to view the game at. Everything from practically-in-your-hero’s-face, to looking directly down from high above, like an old-style RTS. The camera is reasonably intelligent, and will do things like pull back if you scroll into an object that is taller than the level the camera is at (such as a castle wall). There’s also an option to take the rooftops off (as well as the tops of trees) so you can see the map better.
If you want to take a look at the game yourself, you can download the demo, which was released yesterday. |
