You know, the Diablo games weren't necessarily the first of their kind, but it did a ton to popularize the loot n' hack nuttiness that kept many of us clicking away until the wee hours of the morning in the hopes that one beastie or another would drop something really cool (a classic psychological reward model that's worked quite well in the MMO space). But even at the time, the Diablo games could have benefited from a wee bit more visual polish. At 640x480, with no polygons and no rotateable camera, it was fun, and stayed true to the Blizzard model of gameplay over graphics… but the gap between how it and its contemporaries looked was pretty noticeable.
