It's still about immersion, and this time, four more developers join the discussion about this aspect of MMORPGs in the third part of the fifth Online Worlds Round Table at RPGVault. Here's a part of what David Cohen Corval, Founder of Nevrax (makers of Ryzom) has to say:
Immersion is a fascinating dimension of MMORPGs. But it is not an end. While feeding both the mind and the senses, immersion is supposed to help in taking the game's experience to the next levels of fulfillment for the audience. The state of immersion represents success in an attempt at evading real life to travel through extraordinary dimensions. But to the game itself, immersion is a context (good conditions of perception from the mind and the senses of the gamers), or environment, to deliver extra ordinary experiences. Good immersion gives the game more chances to deliver its entertainment more efficiently.
Immersion is very demanding and often fragile. Relying on both the storyline and the real-time world (visuals and audio), immersion in MMORPGs remains a means and not an end. It is supposed to support the experience provided by the game design and level design. But immersion has grown essential to MMORPGs, essential to the 'role' dimension of the games. Bringing purpose to the gamers' actions and pleasure to their senses, immersion can greatly contribute to the game. |
