Bill Roper and Rob Pardo were the ones answering the qestions in the Warcraft 3 Q&A at MacWarcraft3.com. Some questions are Mac specific, but this one is about how to prevent hacking in Warcraft 3:
7. What is Blizzard doing to prevent hacking in WarCraft III?
Before this question can be addressed, it is important to understand what type of game WarCraft III is and how it is played over the Internet. The WarCraft III network model is a routed peer-to-peer system where information is transmitted from one player to a central point and then FONTo the other players. The advantage to this system is that while there are not farms of servers modeling the games, as with the Diablo II Realms, there is some means to authenticate games and prevent cheating. This does not mean, however, that Warcraft III will be free of all hacks and cheats.
In some instances, we will be unable to do anything at all. This is not because we don't want to provide a cheat-free environment, but simply because the technology does not exist to prevent certain types of cheats. This basically means that we will not be able to prevent hacks that removes the fog of war and makes the entire map viewable, for example.
We will, however, be able to stop hacks that could seriously alter the fairness of games in measurable ways, such as ones that change basic unit functionality, such as a speed hack that makes units move faster or a hack that increases mana regeneration for spell casters. You cannot create units, increase their abilities, create items, grant unearned levels to your Hero units, or do anything else that alters the game in multi-player.
We want to stress that we are making hacking as difficult as we can and even IF a map hack shows up, there will be the means for players to discover if they were hacked through replays. If Blizzard discovers that someone is using a map hack, we intend take action against that player. We care deeply about hacks and how they affect our community and we will do everything possible to minimizes the impact of these people on WarCraft III. |
