Kotaku has posted news on a press release about apparent discrimination arising in the world-wide MMO leader, World of Warcraft. The gist of the release details players' reaction to Gold Farmers, primarily those working in China, and how these players are discriminating against other, non-English speaking players. To combat the practice, groups are now forcing other players to "prove" they are not Chinese Gold Farmers by typing a few sentences in English before they can join.
The stigma associated with gold farmers, is that they are Chinese and don’t speak english, yet there they are on U.S. servers farming away, ruining the server’s economy. Perfectly aware of this, the playerbase has begun to try and strike back, forcing players to “prove” they are english before inviting them to groups. Obviously, not all non-english speakers are gold farmers and not all Chinese players are gold farmers - but the stereoptype is following players around. Stereotyping and negative stigmas don’t only occur in the real world, after all.
