Baldur's Gate 2 - Shadows of Amn: 9/10 points |
The best single-player RPG in a standard heroic fantasy world. A ton of quests, cleverly interacting together, awesome 2D graphics and a good leveling system. Only the strict adherence to the D&D rules prevents me to give a 10. Actually, some D&D rules generate unwanted limitations, because they are not designed for video games initially. |
Black & White: 4/10 points |
Very unusual RPG. Yes, I think it is one, as you have to choose the path of your avatar. A great but small 3D world. However, I found no fun playing this game, except the first 10 hours maybe. A try, which will have to be converted. PS: I did not try the multi-player mode. |
Dark Age of Camelot: 9/10 points |
Clearly the best MMORPG I ever played. Excellent leveling system. Very good combat and craft systems. Average PvP and quests system. Multi-classing unavailable. |
Darkstone: 6/10 points |
A Diablo-like game, a bit better actually, with more features in, but equally boring with the repetitive dungeons and the absence of story. No real role play here. |
Diablo: 5/10 points |
Probably the first game making a beat-them-all look like RPG. No role play here and a boring dungeon system, but the game is still addictive, probably because of the leveling up. |
Divine Divinity: 5/10 points |
Reasonably good BG 2 clone. However, the stats of the loots, especially weapons and armors, are randomly generated, even the "unique" ones!!! That means you can find an extremely powerful weapon early in the game and then the fights are completely unbalanced. On the other hand, your "Dragon armor set" can have very bad stats... This is extremely frustating and actually makes me give up before the end of the game. When I say randomly, I mean a stat between 100 and 450, whatever your level is...As a clone of an existing game, it could not have reached a top rating, but with this frustating and incomprehensible design, the rating is even lower. |
Dungeon Siege: 7/10 points |
A good class-less RPG where each of your skills increases when you use it. Very few and basic quests, and actually, no story. It is just a question of leveling, but really addictive. |
Dungeon Siege 2: 7/10 points |
A good Action RPG. Compared to the first sequel, the number of quests have been drastically increased. However they are still very basic and straight forward. When you have planned your skill progression, this game is all about looting, which is random based... |
Dungeons & Dragons Heroes: 4/10 points |
A very linear console-type RPG, with imposed characters, very basic skill-based leveling. A bit more fun when multi-playing. Short life time. |
Elder Scrolls 3 - Morrowind: 9/10 points |
A really great game, with an open class system and a very special but good leveling system. Only two annoying aspects: the game becomes quickly too easy as you level up, and the world is a bit too empty. |
Elder Scrolls 3 - Morrowind: Tribunal: 3/10 points |
I'm rating the add-on here, not Morrowind. This add-on doens't add anything special. The only way it can be interesting would be you did everything possible in Morrowind and still want to play it. But in that case, all your skills/attributes are at the max, you've reached the top of all factions, and then...I bought it, but played something like 20 hours, as opposed to the 300+ hours of Morrowind...Good story however. |
Fallout 2: 10/10 points |
The best RPG so far. Extremely open. A really innovative world. A lot of fun. I'm just sorry I did not play Fallout, the first. |
Gothic 2: 8/10 points |
A very good single-player RPG in an awesome 3D heroic fantasy world. Very good combat system, especially for the melee, as for once, it is not automated and you have to time each action, just like a magician. Really open world, but the leveling system is not rich enough to make the player able to really customize his/her guilded character. 3 classes, no multi-classing. |
Icewind Dale: 7/10 points |
A very good RPG in an awesome 2D heroic fantasy world. Really close to BG 2 in many aspects, it is however very linear and clearly shorter. Good party fights as you can start the game immediately with 6 characters. |
Lands of Lore 1 - The Throne Of Chaos: 9/10 points |
A bit too old to really remember the details, but for sure, the best RPG at that time. A lot of fun. |
Lands of Lore 2 - Guardians of Destiny: 3/10 points |
After the so great Lands of Lore, I waited for the next round for ages. What a disappointmemt! Did not find any fun playing this 3D game ang gave up quickly. |
Neverwinter Nights: 7/10 points |
A relatively good RPG while soloing, which becomes much better when multi-playing. 3D world, restricted to D&D rules. |
Planescape: Torment: 8/10 points |
A very good RPG, with its very own atmosphere. Just a bit too linear. |
Pool of Radiance - Ruins of Myth Drannor: 7/10 points |
A good turn-based RPG, restricted to D&D rules. Very good multi-classing system, but non-existing quests and a couple of bugs. |
Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos: 1/10 points |
A reasonably good game. However, this is NOT a RPG, in any way I can imagine it. It is a RTS game, with an insignificant touch of RPG. That's the reason of my rating. |
World of Warcraft: 5/10 points |
First impressions are very positive. Nice toon-like world, user-friendly interface, clever quest system, etc.
However, after a month or two, it appears that:
- The crafting system, while being easy and entertaining to start with, becomes boring when spending real-time days to craft useless top-level stuff.
- There is no content for top-level characters, especially no decent PvP. The only thing remaining is the very very boring random-based item farming, spending weeks/months to beat the same dungeons again and again.
- This game being "easy" and then accessible to anybody, a lot of its gamers are pretty immature and painful, which is bad for a MMORPG. |
