Lar had something interesting to say about how leveling up and skillpoints is working now on the forums.
Regarding the leveling : Your reactions seem to correlate with the feedback we got from most testers i.e. you levelled to slowly. That's why we considered (and effectively did) the doubling. Originally, you were intended to end up as a level 33 character, but the problem was that when you left Aleroth (the starting village), you usually are something like level 5-6. Considering that Aleroth is perhaps 5% of the game, that would mean you'd only have like 28 levels to look forward to over 95% of the game. Not very much

Another problem of the leveling too slowly is that we linked the skill points to the level ups, going away from the original system where you had to "research" your skills by spending exp points. While that idea looked fine on paper, the moment we started balancing it turned out such a system was very very hard to balance, and that no matter what you did, you always ended up having problems. Linking it to the level ups solved a lot of these problems, except of course that you didn't get enough skillpoints One original solution was to give you two skillpoints every time you leveled to a level that was divisible by 5, yielding you 33+6=39 skill points which in the end still wasn't enough either. So, by now having you finish the game at around level 60 or so, you'll get 60+12=72 skill points which corresponds with learning 14 skills to their maximum amount (each skill having five points). Add to that the skills you learn by finding/buying skill books and the skill bonusses you get from special items/story, you in the end get the equivalent of two paths at maximum level and some other assorted skills.

Mastery of a way comes when you learn all skills of a way and mastery of a path comes when you learn all skills of a path. You do not have to learn these skills to max level (of which there are five). So you can get a master of a path relatively fast though you do have to take into account that minimum levels apply to learn certain skills (i.e. a level 1 mage is not going to learn summon dreadknight for instance). The level of mastery depends on how much levels of the skills you have in a path/way. If you have level 1 of each skill in a path, then you have level 1 mastery, if you have level 2 of most skills in a path and level 3 of a few in that path, then you still have level 2 mastery of the path and are on your way to level 3 mastery. The same goes for mastery of a way. It all sounds terribly complicated, but it's all rather simple actually.

To further clarify - with 8 skillpoints and reaching the minimum level of the skill with the highest level requirement in a path, you can become a level 1 master of that path. Hope it's clear now So yes, theorethically and with a bit of luck, you could become master of three ways by learning all skills to level 1, but if you do that, I don't think you'll last long at the higher levels - things tend to get a bit crowded You will have to choose.
