The Armchair Empire has written a hands-on preview of Disciples 2 - Dark Prophecy the sequel to the sleeper hit from Strategy First. Here's something about the battles:
The battle portion of D2 is classic turn-based strategy. You can’t change your unit’s positions once you’re in battle, so it’s important to put the ranged attackers like the low HP archmages and archers, behind a line of melee fighters before fighting. Once locked in battle there’s the option to hit “auto” and just watch what happens. I don’t recommend this method as it split 50-50 the number of times I got turned into dust. The other options available are retreat, guard, wait, and attack. Attack is the default option and the proper choices between the other three are essential to winning. (Duh!) Casting spells and such is easy to do – as is retreating when you’re suddenly faced with an opposition you weren’t prepared for. Some of the spell attacks are used to cool effect. The powerful ones are incredibly hard to gain because the magic users tend to be on the weak side and gaining enough XP before they die is a real challenge – possibly too much of a challenge. Leaders and other party members can be resurrected at nearby castles under your control, as long as one party member makes it out of a confrontation. This alleviates the frustration of losing your best fighter – unless of course your entire group is wiped out then it's hair-pulling time. The battles themselves are balanced. If you’ve got a group of five level 3 units, you’ll have no problem defeating a bunch of imps. But you do face tougher (and bigger) foes. |
