The game begins 4,000 years before the rise of the Galactic Empire; when the Republic was at a very vulnerable time (they ran out of sugar last week and tea supplies are dwindling by the day). Thanks to some pretty nasty attacks from the Mandalorians, the Republic called on the Jedi Council to help, which sent two young Jedi, Revan and Malak, to lend a hand in their struggle. After a long war, the Jedi eventually won out and peace and order was once again restored to the Republic.
