GamesDomain has posted a Q&A with with Ray A. Muzyka, BioWare's joint CEO, and Julio Torres, assistant producer at LucasArts, about their upcoming RPG Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (believe me, life of an editor was much easier when games were called Pong or Bling or X instead of "The extremely long name of a game with a couple of inspiring subtitles that drive editors crazy when they have to type them"). Here's a little something:
GD: What do you feel that previous Star Wars games were lacking and wanted to now emulate in Knights?
JT: I think that LucasArts have dropped somewhat specifically in releasing a lot of SW titles, and the actual games themselves were, as far as their content and gameplay, brought a question about how important it is to not only rely on the fact that SW is a good thing to have to make games for, but also that you have to concentrate on making good gameplay behind that title and make something that's cool and special, and the storyline should be there, and I think that after the first games on Episode I, there was a lacking; we loosened up. We were very aware of that and we've made an effort to learn from it and I think we're moving in a direction that will remedy that, regardless of what timeline they are in, have the elements that make a good game. We're definitely concentrating more on that, rather than just saying "oh, it's a Star Wars game, it'll be fine" and I think there's been a lot of change in the way we've decided to make games. We're expanding to use a much larger world, we're creating engines and making games off of that, or work with BioWare or The Collective to make sure we can really the higher quality of games that people will enjoy. |
