RPGDot 2001 Awards
Best Atmosphere in an RPG

The RPGDot Team, 2002-01-08

In the last weeks of December 2001, you had the opportunity to vote for the best RPGs released in 2001. Nobody knows better what these are then you the player and as such The RPGDot 2001 Awards will look good on any game receiving one.
We thank all those who entered their votes and helped us in making it possible to select the best games.

Best Atmosphere in an RPG

Every good RPG has an atmosphere in which the player feels comfortable and in which the player almost can feel that he or she is part of the experience. A game can have stunning graphics or awesome sound, but without a decent atmosphere it won't last very long. So here are the games who are known to give this experience.

The winner: Everquest: Shadows of Luclin
This third expansion to Everquest has taken a turn in the graphics department and improves big time on the 3D eyecandy part.
Adding a new world to explore (the moon of Luclin) with 25 new areas and a new race adds a lot of interesting new gameplay to this expansion, which will keep you occupied long enough.

Online games must have an atmospere to offer in order for people to keep up the monthly fees. Everquest has proven it before and Shadows of Luclin proves it now.... there is definitely atmosphere.

Runner Up: Wizardry 8
Even though the graphics of Wizardry might not be up to the latest standard, this game has much going for it. Intuitive gameplay, fierce battles combined with an excellent combat system and the need to use strategy in your fights are just a few of them.

For those who like classic roleplaying games, Wizardry 8 is a must have and if you ever wondered what the genre is like, then Wizardry 8 is a fine place to start as it will not be a disappointment.

Second Runner Up: Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal
If you are a follower of the Son of Bhaal then you know why this game is in the top when it comes to atmosphere. Bioware extends the Infinity Engine a bit more with this last addition to it and shows that even with an older engine with some drawbacks, it's still possible to create a game with a great atmosphere.

As a fan of these games I'm likely to be biased, but Ithink this game is where it belongs.... at the top.
