Today Pyranha Bytes released a new patch for the English and German versions of Gothic, which adresses occasional crashes during gamestart under Win98. It fixes this problem on Radeon 7500, Radeon 8500 and GeForce 3 cards. The suggested driver version for Radeon users is 4.13.7191 (10/2001); thanks to World of Gothic.de for the info. Please note that the patch is unsupported. Only apply it if you encountered this bug. V1.08h or 1.08j are required. For more detailed info see this quote from the readme:
- This patch fixes occasional crashes during gamestart.
Especially if you play under Windows 98 and use some weird graphiccard/driver combination there
is a possibilty that the game crashes with an illegal call to a directx utility function named "D3DXGetDeviceCount".
This misbehaviour is now corrected as we do now link the gothic.exe with the directx 8 libraries, which do better support
the newer driver and graphiccards.
We suggest to use this exe only if you encounter crashes during gamestart (in detail: if you encounter crashes with
the radeon 8500 or the Geforce 3 under Win98)
This version is not supported by Piranha-Bytes.
You can download the patch here: gothic_patch_108k.exe (right-click, save as; 5.0 MB)
