Game Captain has published a German language preview of Neverwinter Nights 2. The have this to say (pardon errors due to using an online translator):
On the character's long way, he/she will meet many people, who ask to be allowed to accompany them a while. They make this offer not merely out of charity, but rather out of entirely different or selfish reasons. No more than three companions can accompany the hero at any time.
