The second Dragon Empires Q&A went online at RPGVault. Designer Mark Zechiel answers Jonric's questions:
Jonric: What are your high-level goals with respect to the concept and design of the economy in Dragon Empires? Did you develop or use any kind of economic model?
Mark Zechiel: At the highest level, we wanted to engage players in other avenues of play. We thought that by developing the economy appropriately, we would add meaningful activities for players to participate in, namely item manufacturing and trading. We also felt that these activities would feed nicely into all of the other activities taking place in the world so that the whole system feels complete.
In our initial model, we heavily explored player roles within the economy, viewing it as an eco-system. Traders progress by exploiting the unequal distribution of resources and production of goods throughout the world. Outlaws progress by robbing traders on their routes. Bounty Hunters progress by killing outlaws carrying stolen goods. The more lucrative the trade route, the greater the potential for outlaws, and in turn the greater potential for bounty hunters. Each of the roles grew progressively more risky as the potential gain for the player grew. |
