The online business publication ContentBiz is running a story about how Second Life successfully increased its subscriber base of paying "Premium" members by simplifying its registration process and dropping the subscription fee for entry-level "Basic" accounts. The story outlines the steps Linden Labs followed in its analysis of the situation and arriving at the current subscription structure.
The free basic membership approach has paid big time dividends for Linden Lab. "We saw a 350% increase in completed registrations immediately," Fleck says. As of September 2005 the company formally announced all basic memberships would be free.
Between Sept. 2005 and January 2006, Second Life boosted basic memberships rose from 42,000 to 129,000 while its premium members rose from 39,500 to 68,000. The average monthly growth rate for premium memberships spiked from 6%-10% in the four months following Sept. 2005.
