Shawn F. Carnes is the author of the third Horizons Dev Diary at Gamespy. This time, it deals with the trade system in the upcoming MMORPG:
Players will go out into the world and collect resources, and some will even be able to cultivate their own resources for their own purposes. It is important to remember, though, that it is not our intent to create a detailed simulation of the nuances of metal extraction and stone quarrying at the cost of interesting gameplay. I will be the first to admit that there are some decisions we made about resources and how they are gathered that don't jibe completely with how they are done in the real world. There is a fine balance you have to strike when coming up with "fantasy-based realism." On one hand, you don't want to abandon the laws of the physical world outright, but on the other you've got magic-wielding dragons as players.
