A quite detailed Eschaton Online interview has been posted at GamespyDaily. They talked to Gnostic Labs’ Travis Cannell:
GameSpy: Will the team over the final online retail product have policies in place for dealing with bothersome users? Will there be rules against specific types of behavior?
Travis: Personal attacks that go beyond the confines of the game, certain types of hacking or attacks on our servers, and other instances of extreme bad behavior will be dealt with appropriately outside the context of the game.
Inside the context of the game it is another story. We the developers are creating the universe, but the players will govern themselves. It’s a paradigm shift in how virtual worlds are operated. From a financial perspective, it’s a tremendous business advantage to shift the burden of the judicial responsibility onto the players. Players will love us for it, because we are giving them (collectively) the control over their experience that they have awaited. For a variety of largely historical reasons, the current crop of major online games have adopted – and to some extent are stuck with – a system where players fundamentally can not govern their behavior in the game, and so game administrators must handle this role. So they are wasting a good portion of the monthly revenue for a ‘service’ that the players really don’t need or want – if you had a fundamentally better design. |
