PC Gamer is bringing back very nice memories with their classic interview conducted with Warren Spector and Doug Church about a true genre classic, Ultima Underworld. Here's a very small snippet, the whole interview is very long, but very interesting at the same time:

    2) Compare the size of the team and the amount of work needed to build a game like UW with the resources required for Deus Ex.

    >>WS: Well, the amount of work per person probably hasn't changed all that much but in terms of team size there's just no comparison. Underworld was made by a relatively small team, most of whom wore multiple hats. Back then you had programmers building levels and composing music and testing and writing conversations. Overall, costs were a lot lower, which meant risk was lower and the likelihood of turning a profit in a less saturated market was greater.
