A new City of Heroes interview with Rick Dakan, lead designer, was posted at Gamespy. Here's a snippet:
GameSpy: When you guys first started fleshing out the City of Heroes game concept did you research any PnP superhero games to aid in developing the basic rules for the game? Have any of the concepts and conventions used in PnP RPG systems influenced the design of City of Heroes?
Rick Dakan: Well, I and the other designer, Jack Emmert, came out of the pen and paper role-playing industry, so pretty much every decision about City of Heroes is somehow informed by tabletop gaming in some way. We didn't look at any specific RPG, but since we've played them all (at one time or another), there's a mix of all of them in there. As for what made it into the game from PnP RPG systems, well, that's kind of hard to distinguish. I mean, all of the CRPG conventions originally came from tabletop gaming, and City of Heroes uses many of the same systems -- stats, skills, hit points, experience, etc. |
