Gamespy brightens up our day with a new interview with Richard Garriott aka Lord British. It deals, who would have expected this, with MMORPG's, Lineage and such:
GameSpy: Online team based games like Day of Defeat and Counter-Strike have huge followings and the players who take part spend almost as much time on those as some of the serious players do on Ultima or EverQuest. Do you think there is a way of seeing "one-off" mini-adventures as a way of letting players take part in single evening adventures?
Richard Garriot: I believe the goal they are describing is current and I think it is coming with the second generation of games, but I wouldn't describe it as a one-off game. If you think about Counter-Strike everyone starts off on similar footing but it doesn't give you superiority the next time. Yes, the people who play more may be more skilled, but just because they are more devoted doesn't mean they are more rewarded. |
