Carrots for Roleplay @ GamerGod

An interesting editorial at GamerGod called Carrots for Roleplay looks at ways to foster roleplaying in MMORPGs:
If roleplay is such a great thing to have, why is it that it seems so rare? Part of it is that good roleplay requires a certain level of maturity. As documented in Uncle Figgy's Guide to Roleplaying For Non-Roleplayers, "It also takes a large dose of maturity. The mature individual accepts the bad things in the game as easily as they rejoice in the good. But an immature gamer can't quite make the distinction between the game and reality." Yet, even older players rarely seem to bother to roleplay in an online game like a MMORPG. It seems to me that there needs to be a certain incentive to want to roleplay maturely.
