Avernum 2: 9/10 points |
A fantastic game - great storyline, interesting quests and characteres. Nearly all the NPC's (besides guards) have something to say. I love exploring in RPG's and the Avernum series certainly delivers. I quite like the graphics though they are a bit small. Interface can be a bit annoying if your mouse doesnt have extra buttons on it. IMO A2 is the best of the three Avernums. If you're into RPG's this is one not to be missed. |
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: 9/10 points |
As others have mentioned - the maps are very linear. Jedi classes are unbalanced as they excel vs other classes which makes combat easy. Also there's little variation in tactics required in different combat situations. Skills get less important as the game progresses (only worthwhile ones are persuasion and computer skills). For me, the game crashed on an average of once every three hours.
On the plus - Excellent graphics (each planet has its own unique look), numerous and interesting quests, many of which offer a light side and dark side solution. Good storyline. Good character interaction - characters feel like they have their own personalities. Most characters have interesting background stories which they reveal as the game progresses (I particularly liked the AK Droid stories!). Another nice touch is that characters that you aren't using level up with the main party. Two of the three mini-games are entertaining. Game lasts for about 30 hours.
Overall the positives far outweigh the negatives. Thoroughly enjoyable throughout. A must buy! |
Wizardry 8: 4/10 points |
This game has a lot going for it. I feel it is really let down by the many tedious, pointless random battles. The battles are turn-based and take an eternity to complete just one. This would be tolerable if previously cleared areas did not respawn. Ultimately I got too frustrated with this and never finished the game. The interface for casting spells in battle is tedious due to repetition which makes battles even worse.
Character development is definitely the best thing about the game - so many different classes and races! NPC interaction and quests are average (though it is hard to make a definitive remark about this as I did not finish the game).
Overall I did enjoy the game when I first started and the world is intriguing with many areas to explore. However the battles just became too tiring. I've never played any of the previous Wizadry's - perhaps I could have withstood the tedium if I had. |
