Lionheart - Legacy of the Crusader: 7/10 points |
I'm giving a 7 instead of a 6 just to boost the average a bit. I don't feel the game is as bad as some reviewers make it out, but it's definitely a disappointment, for all the reasons mentioned.
Combat is indeed terribly difficult at first, but my unarmed Feralkin is doing surprisingly well now towards the endgame.
The skill/spell system needs major tweaks. After saving and boosting a few spells, I noticed no real difference in effects after dumping dozens of skill points into them! I'm currently relying on "Absorb Spirit" to leech health from corpses. The heal spell is ridiculously limp, as are the potions.
I'm using base-level "Divine Might" and "Feral Lash" spells to augment my pugilistic fists of fury, but I'm not sure they're doing much good, and can't waste points raising them further.
On a minor cosmetic note, I miss the Fallout cartoons for each game attribute. I realize Fallout had it easier with their light-hearted Pip Boy style, but a little flash when choosing skills/perks would have been nice.
The all-or-nothing interface choice is annoying, yes.
Another annoyance is that the "Search" mode turns off in combat (which is damn often) and doesn't re-enable itself automatically. There are a lot of things to find if you search, and it would have been nice to have that handled for me.
A similiar curse at the tab "Status" which turns itself off every time you load a game.
All those gripes aside, I'm still playing the game, so it does manage to be fun beyond the frustration.
In a nutshell, yes, it's a terrible disappointment, but it /is/ the only game besides Fallout to use the system, so maybe we can forgive BIS/Reflexive in hopes future titles are better.
