The Beginning

Overview of Joram's cellar
You begin the game in the cellar of Joram's house (although you don't know that yet). This is a great place to start and try out all your interface options. You could start with putting on the sandals, located in front of the bed. Just click on them and you'll be wearing them. They are your first piece of protection. The reason the engine adds them is that you are not wearing any sandals yet and it assumes that you would like to wear them. The same goes for the knife (you'll find that in the other room), when you click on it the engine will equip you with it. You normally won't be walking around with your weapon in your hand as NPCs might consider that an aggressive approach. For this you first have to switch to combat mode, by clicking on the combat button or by using the hotkey you assigned to this option (default = 'c'). (Note however that the engine will not equip you with armor and weapons when you don't meet the requirements set for them).

Also don't forget to pick up the potion on the table. It's a red potion which means it's for restoring your health, which will always come in handy. And empty the chest, which should contain some gold. Now check out the other room (with the knife) and when you are finished go up the ladder.

Most of the items you find in chests, barrels and lockers are randomized, which means when you save and reload the game there is a chance that there are different items in them, but once they are cleared out, they stay empty (unless you put something in them of course).

Joram
After going up the ladder, you are in the first floor of Joram's house. Joram will be waiting for you in the left room, but if you want you can first check out the other rooms first. When you do, you'll find out that you can move a lot of stuff around and pick up things as well. Also there are books and manuscripts you can read. These books and manuscripts offer a nice background for the world you are going to walk, so if you like that then you should read them all. In several occasions books might hold the essential information to solve a quest, so don't be too quick in not checking them out.
Besides that you can take all the gold you can find and there is also a better weapon there, which is a dirk. This weapon is however not useable by you yet as you don't have the required level for it, but you will later on in the game of course and you can always sell it.
Finally walk to the left room where Joram will approach you.

Mardaneus and Lanilor

You can ignore to talk with him if you want, but this is the kind of game where information can be everywhere and this is your chance to find out about the healers of Aleroth, how you got here and especially about Mardaneus and George. Also he will tell you that you can take from him what you want. Which is nice as it's something you should definitely not do anywhere else. The good people of Aleroth will not think kindly of you when you do and might react accordingly.

When you've done all what there is to do then it's time to leave. When you exit the house the game takes over and plays an ingame movie of Mardaneus and Lanilor, listen to it and learn that Mardaneus is a real strange fella, to say the least. When they are done, you get control back. From here you can go anywhere you want, you can even leave Aleroth if you want, but that is not the wise thing to do, there are quests to explore, experience to be earned and fun to be had. So let's see this as a sign and find out where Mardaneus went.


Mardaneus and Lanilor
From Joram's house go to the southeast. You'll first pass by Lanilor's house and then you'll see Mardaneus' house. When you get close enough a new ingame movie takes place and you experience that Mardaneus apparently has gone completely mad and turns Lanilor into ice after which he enters his house. When the movie ends and you approach Lanilor you find out that he still can talk. He asks you to convince Mardaneus to free him. Unfortunately the door to his house is locked, but Lanilor tells you that it can be accessed from the cellar of the house which can be reached by going through a well.

Just fall in the well Mardaneus' Cellar

The well is to the right of the house, enter it and find yourself in a rather large cellar. There are some rats in the cellar that you can kill to get some experience points, but there is also a skeleton. He is in the northeast of the cellar. It is not so difficult to kill and once you've done that, you can take the emerald that happens to be be lying around there. What also lies around is rotten food and drinks. When you learn the Alchemy skill then with the rotten food you could learn to make poison. But you don't have that skill yet so just leave it be for now.
Make your way through the cellar, one of the doors is closed but finding the key is easy enough. Explore the cellar and check everything there is to check for goodies.

The entry to Mardaneus' house can be found in the southwest of the cellar, it's a ladder leading up. When you use it than you meet Mardaneus who is ready to cast a spell on you also. Just convince him that he has 'accidentally' frozen Lanilor and he will quickly undo that. That solves your first quest.

While the two of them are outside you might take the time to explore Mardaneus' house a bit and find and read whatever you can. One of the things you'll find is a locked chest you can not open, not even with the key under the bed, that key opens another chest in the same house.

When you are done inside, go to Lanilor who should still be standing there and ask him about Mardaneus. He will explain to you that he might be possessed by a demon and that the answer to that lies in the catacombs beneath Alleroth. He will also tell you how to enter the catacombs (take notes here), but you should not go there until you solved all the quests as you could really use the experience awards and level ups from that before you go into them.


Honey, Nectar of the Gods
Just left of Mardaneus' house you will find some beehives. As you might know, bees are rather good in helping to produce honey. And honey is good, trust me. So let's make some honey, it's rather simple but I'll explain it anyway. Take a honeyrack and put the honeyrack on the beehive. The quick bees will turn this into honey, which falls down on the ground. Then take one of the empty jars and put that on the honey and you'll end up with a honey jar.

Eating honey will do something funny with you. It will increase your Strength, Agility and Intelligence with 5 points each (all secondary stats will increase accordingly). Even though this increase is only for a while (2 ingame hours) it can be great in the midst of a battle. So make as much honey as you can and store it for a later moment.
