Johan Tenga of the Age of Conan team has updated his blog at 1UP.I was reading the blog that my colleague Yngvild wrote last week and I have to agree with her how hard it is to explain to someone outside the game industry what it is your actually doing at work. Like yesterday I came home and my wife asked me "So how was work, what did you do?" I gave it some thought and decided not to wrap the answer this time to see how she would react. So I said "Today was very interesting as we were brainstorming camp design and ring spawns. It is really cool what we can do with combining the new AI system and scripts. I also played around with the bones on the new faces and I got to tweak my instantiation design a bit". Now my wife isn't really a gamer so she just looked at me with a question mark in her face. So I ended up rephrasing my self "I spent most of the time in meetings and then I got to look at some new pretty character faces". "Ah why didn't you just say so?" was the reply.
I also think it is harder being a designer and explain what you do. How many of you out there really knows what a system designer does or what a content designer does? Many people I've meet thinks that a designer is a graphic artist making graphics for the game. So what do we really do? More... | Source: 1UP |
