Eve Online has been reviewed at Game Club Central. Despite a few reservations the final score is 8/10. Here's an excerpt:
What’s not limiting is EVE’s economic aspect , where the game’s true focus lies. In the end it’s all about the credits and buying all the neat things to play with . One of the first things they tell you to do in game is mine asteroids and mine you must if you want to get a good start to upgrading your ship and your character. Mining can be slow in the beginning and as much fun as watching paint dry. Tedium moments like that are often broken up by the ever popular space pirates who always show up when you start mining ore rich asteroids. But once you get better equipment or a better ship to haul more ore it becomes an easier and more profitable exercise. Mining asteroids however is not the sole means of accruing credits. You can manufacture items and offer them for sale on the player driven open market that works in real time. You can try your hand at Commodities trading by buying goods low in one system and selling high in another. For the more combat oriented you can kill NPC pirates for small bounties and sell the loot you get from them. A player can choose the role of a Bounty Hunter by collecting bounties (I.E. Kill) placed on the heads of other players by other players. Pirating merchant vessels (both NPC and Player controlled) is also another source of income in the EVE universe but can put you on the wrong side of the Law with a criminal record to haunt you. For those seeking direction, NPC agents made available to players can also give missions ranging from ferrying missions, to mining, to kill missions, all yielding small monetary awards. There’s plenty to do in EVE. |
