Gamersclick has conducted an interview with the Gothic II development team.

Here's a snip (DT is for "Development Team"):
GC: Is there anything specific that you wanted to improve on from the original?

DT: The controls confused many players due to an unusual way of using the keyboard, so we come up with a re-designed and simple interface in Gothic II.

The quick development in terms of graphic technology demanded some improvements, so we supplied our in-house engine with some new features and optimized performance.

I wouldn’t say Gothic’s AI was “in need of improvement” as it was quite impressive right from the start. However, the game designers threw the original design overboard and came up with a new one. It was worth the effort, and I am often overwhelmed by the NPCs reactions. The people act and respond so naturally that I forget it’s a game.
