RPGVault has a new instalment of the Charr Team Letter online. CEO and Lead Developer Stephan Cam tells you what has been going on with development over the last months:
Dungeon - Benediction: Benediction is a crunchy green-glassed badlands zone based around a medium-sized commoner city that was immolated when its power station went critical. The city is a charred skeleton of its former self, and the surrounding area is still highly radioactive. An evil cult of necromancers now bases itself out of the ruins of the old power station and have raised an army of radioactive mutant undead.
More than anything, Fate Studios is trying to break away from the current trend of 'golf course' style zones with endless green hills. It may be trendy to knock EverQuest nowadays, but MMORPG designers everywhere owe much to that game for its inspirational zone design. Think back to your first days in Unrest before the zone was 'owned' by players - that was a terrifying place to be! EverQuest really excelled at creating richly themed environments that each felt different from the next, but combined into a large and believable world. When the smoke clears and people can take an objective look at the first generation of MMORPGs, they will appreciate just how big a contribution Verant made to the scene - and Fate wants to continue this tradition of strongly themed region designs so that our world feels 'lived in' and real. |
