Ion Storm's Programmer Paul Tozour was the partner in an interview at Voodooextreme.com. Although it isn't just about Thief 3 (but about AI in general), there's a piece on Thief 3 in it of course :-):
Phantom: I have a question about the Thief 3 AI:
1. On a scale from 1 to 10, as far as technological advancements/improvements in AI, where would you rate the original Thief 1 & 2 AI, and on the same scale, where do you think the Thief 3 AI will rate?
I hope that question is 'basic' enough for you to answer, even though it does concern Thief 3.
I don’t know if I can really answer that, because if I say good things about the Thief AI, it will come out sounding like I’m trying to hype the Thief series (which I am), and if I say anything even mildly negative about it, it will sound like I’m somehow criticizing the original Thief development team from Looking Glass (which I am definitely, definitely not).
The best answer I can give is that I personally feel that the Thief 1 & 2 AI stands as one of the most impressive first-person game AIs ever created, and some of its AI features have yet to be matched by any other game to date.
As for Thief 3, I don’t think any number I could give you would be very meaningful. Clearly, we’re striving for a 10 or above. If we weren’t, we should be taken out and shot. |
