Killer Betties' own John Sawyer presents his promising preview for Funcom's upcoming and highly ambitious RPG/MMORPG hybrid, Age of Conan - Hyborian Adventures...
From what I saw, there are two major features that would draw a player to Age of Conan. The first is the setting – anyone who has always wanted to play in a dark, barbaric world (or is a fan of the Conan novels) will find something unique in this game. Hyborea is intended to be a world true enough to the fiction – and with a strong continuing storyling – that players will be able to really get into their persona.
The second aspect that sets Age of Conan apart is an active combat system. Of course the RPG elements are there governing whether you are strong enough to handle a fight, but there is no autopilot here. Uniqueness is becoming important in an overly crowded MMO market and this may be just unique enough.
