Gamespy conducted an interview with Bethesda Softworks' Todd Howard (hell, they even have a picture of him *g*) about the upcoming RPG Morrowind. Here's an interesting question and the answer:

GameSpy: What is going to set Morrowind apart from the other RPGs coming out this year and early next? What can we look forward to?

Todd Howard: We create our games open-ended. You can go do what you want. You do not follow a predetermined linear path, like in the other games. We want you to make the character you want and go do what you want. Join the Legion, become an assassin. We don't care. Just have fun. We try to create virtual worlds and factions that have real motivations. So we try to allow you to interact with all these people in a realistic and meaningful way. In addition, the game never ends, even after you finish the main quest. You can go join the Mages Guild and try to become the Archmage. You can also download new quests and content created with the Construction Set that adds right into your game.

Then they talk about summoning creatures:

GameSpy: Can you explain the spell system and how players can create their own spells? Are you going to have summons in the game?

Todd Howard: Yes, you can summon creatures! We have a new school of magic, Conjuration that allows you to do that. What we do is code basic effects, like "fire damage" and then in the editor and game you can create spells with those effects. So you decide how the fire damage acts. Does it do 10 damage by touch or is it shot like a fireball that explodes in a 20 foot radius killing everyone? It's up to you. You can combine effects you've learned in the game and create your own super-spells. That's one of the bonuses to being in the Mage's Guild, making your own spells.

Also in this interview. some info on the XBox version...
