Another playing session for A Tale in the Desert has been announced:
During the last play session, the economy in ATITD seemed to suddenly come alive. This may simply be because people are getting comfortable with the game, and know which goods they prefer to work on. However, I suspect that the more common reason is that there are now so many things that a well equipped character needs, that it's becoming difficult for an individual to produce everything required. Here's what I've observed:

A trade in flax and flax products has emerged - looms are rare in Egypt at this point (only 2 exist), so few people are able to make canvas - yet I've seen lots of people who have acquired small amounts of this important resource. In some cases, new players have agreed to work for established players or guilds - harvesting the raw flax, or gathering straw or wood. It's common to loan a new player an axe if wood is what's needed.

I've noticed certain people have worked hard on the Test of Mentorship within the Discipline of Leadership. Vodolus appears to be on the brink of passing the test, with six mentor shrines built in his honor. This is a significant achievement, considering that building a shrine to honor your mentor is totally optional. If a seventh shrine is built (and Vodolus visits all seven shrines), he will have completed the first character advancement of anyone in the game. (Note: An event will take place if this happens.)

Anyway, the next official play session will be:

    10/30/2001 7:00PM EST until 10:00PM
UK Testers: London time is 5 hours ahead of EST.

As I've mentioned in previous email, we occasionally do small "dev sessions" which are announced on our IRC channel #ATITD on irc.stratics.com:6667. Tonight we're playtesting Takeskot to help get ready for tomorrow's official test. It's a short session, starting at 1:30AM, and going for about an hour, maybe more. Drop in if you'd like to help out - we need 8 people for a full Takeskot game.

Again, lots of new content has been added. Funding "Controlled Burn" at the Great University of the Human Body has been partially completed. There is no chariot stop by that university - the wood and water they need has to be carried in, although some people have offered to act as couriers for donated goods. We're also going to try to release another new technology for tomorrow's test.

The test of Takeskot (Endurance) has been completed, and a Takeskot court put in near the second People's School of architecture. Some testing may still be needed to assure the two sides are balanced. Rules for Takeskot are on the ATITD forums, and the GoO web site.

I have heard of several new guilds being planned. With the introduction of the Test of Takeskot, this is important because the sport is played guild-vs-guild. Unlike most tests, advancement is awarded to the entire team, and not just to individual players.

As always, software to play ATITD is available on our web site, http://www.ataleinthedesert.com. When prompted for a username, enter the character name you would like to use, and make up a password. It's essentially an open beta (login doesn't verify that you're on this list), but there is a significant in-game reward for being on the list.

    On the Nile,
    Teppy
