Here's the summary of an E3 Gothic II feature by Swiss games site Gamesweb:

Gothic II starts right where Gothic left off; the events following the fall of the barrier enabled five dragons to enter the world, and now they plan on conquering it. Necromancer Xardas needs a magical artifact to fight the power-hungry dragons; the player will have to search for this artifact. Thinking of it, this is the third version of the main plot :-)...
There are sub-plots as well; one, for example, features the ore mines while another sub-plot focuses on orcs who besiege a town. There will be several methods to solve each quest; it will be up to the player to decide which course of action to take.

The Gothic II game world is five times the size of the original Gothic area - 25 km2. It includes the Colony, but textures have been redone and details added.

About 500 characters populate the Gothic II world, all more detailed and with a higher poly count than their Gothic predecessors, and there are 150 to 200 different weapons and items to choose from.

Gothic II introduces 'real' character classes. The player can follow the path of the mage, paladin or warrior. Mages will be able to learn up to 47 different spells, some new, some revamped and with prettier effects. Paladins are allowed to wield up to 10 spells; their use of weaponry is limited to a certain arsenal while warriors may be proficient in all weapon categories.

The game engine remains the same, but there have been improvements in both the graphics and performance areas. The not-too popular user interface has been changed; the left mouse button, for example, is used for attacking and the right mouse button for parrying. The inventory will be mouse-compatible as well to allow quicker access and easier handling.

Other optimizations are in progress.
