RPG Vault has written a City of Heroes preview article after spending some in-game time with Cryptic Studios' CEO Michael Lewis at a media event:
The event began with some preliminary comments, after which we were introduced to the character creation process. A player's first priority is to choose from one of five Origin types, which are Mutant, Natural, Magic, Science and Technology. We were told these distinctions mainly impact the opponents you'll face in early quests. Statistics and costume options are unaffected. The next requirement is selecting an Archetype, and this decision does influence your hero's style of play. For example, a Blaster utilizes ranged attacks to deal out heavy damage, but is not well equipped to handle direct melee. On the other hand, a Tanker can absorb quite a bit of punishment up front, at a cost to its overall offensive punch. It seems each profession is a viable choice, although Lewis did point out that the group-oriented Controller, while of great value in large-scale battles, can be challenging to solo at high levels. The other two alternatives are Scrapper and Defender. The former reverses the capabilities of the Tanker, hitting harder but more easily hurt, while the latter primarily operates at a distance, emphasizing buffs and debuffs.
