At Massive Multiplayer.org, you'll find an interview with Mike Snyder, lead developer for Prowler Productions, who is developing the Browser Based Games, Linatux Online and Starlock. The still 3D pictures in Starlock remind me a lot of the original Myst (not in design, but as a method of illustration). Was there ever a question of making the images the method of navigation, rather than a text shortcut link on the page? Is there a potential for a future version of Starlock to have "hot" images?
The illustrations are definitely stills. Bryce allows animations and has even been the tool behind some clever short animated films, but my team is too small (even if Anna and Steven had taken over that aspect of the game), and my old computer too obsolete to really bring full-motion video to life for this game.
Yes, at one time, I did think about hot-spot image maps for the graphics. The galactic navigation screen actually does this (for on-screen course plotting). Currently the rest of the game doesn’t. It really would not be difficult at all (would take a couple hours of coding, plus quite a while to work out all the hot spots). The biggest problem is that all exits aren’t clearily visible in every scene. There is a back room in Chuckle’s Pub, for instance, but the door is off-screen. Besides, if I did that, then I’d be tempted to add image maps for examining "background" objects in a room, and this would delay things every further. |
